Climate Change: Prospects for Nature
A Lecture from Dr. Tom Lovejoy
Creator of the PBS series "Nature"

Join Museum of the Earth as we kick off our Earth Day celebration with a reception and lecture from Dr. Tom Lovejoy.

Lovejoy is a nationally recognized environmental advocate and founder of the public television series “Nature.” He is currently President of the Heinz Center, a nonprofit, nonpartisan institution dedicated to improving the scientific and economic foundation for environmental policy through multisectoral collaboration. Before assuming leadership at the Heinz Center, he was the World Bank’s Chief Biodiversity adviser and Lead Specialist for Environment for Latin America and the Caribbean and Senior adviser to the President of the United Nations Foundation. Dr. Lovejoy has been Assistant Secretary and Counselor to the Secretary at the Smithsonian Institution, Science adviser to the Secretary of the Interior, and Executive Vice President of the World Wildlife Fun-U.S. He also served on science and environmental councils or committees under the Reagan, Bush and Clinton administrations.

The Lovejoy lecture and reception is free and open to the public.

Join us at the Museum for showings of specially selected episodes of the Discovery Channel's "Planet Earth," hosted in the museum classroom by local scientists whose expertise will allow them to delve more deeply into topics, answer tough questions, and facilitate discussion. The final segment in the series is "Living Together" with Associate Director of Outreach, Dr. Rob Ross. No admission to the showing of "Planet Earth" will be charged. It is free and open to the public.

History of Life Course
Thursday, April 10

This 6-week course will take you on a journey through time utilizing the exhibits at Museum of the Earth to highlight important events throughout the earth’s history. This course is free to Museum volunteers and members. $10 for non-volunteers/members. Topics that will be covered:

Perspective on life
Ancient seas over New York
Taking control of the land
Rule of the reptiles
Arms race in the sea
Mammals rule a world of change

Fossil Identification Day at Museum of the Earth
April 12, 2008
10:00 am – 12:00 pm

Staff paleontologists at the Museum of the Earth and the Paleontological Research Institution help you identify your most puzzling find, from brachiopods to trilobites to funny-looking rocks. Fossil identification is included with your admission to the museum.

GNSI Art Workshops: Ice Age Animals

Museum of the Earth and Guild of Natural Science Illustrator’s (GNSI) present Art Workshops taught by locally-well known scientific illustrator, Camille Doucet. Each workshop (total of 4) will explore different methods and mediums of producing artwork, with an emphasis on Museum of the Earth fossils and specimens. These workshops are for both children and adults, ages 8 and up. Supplies will be provided.

Cost for each 3-hour workshop: Members: $36, Non-Members: $45 (discount if you sign up for 2+ workshops)

Up next in the series is “Fresh Water” with Cornell University’s, Katie Wagner.

No admission to the showing of “Planet Earth” will be charged. It is free and open to the public.

Join Museum of the Earth as we journey back in time to visit the balmy Eocene lake shores of Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah.

Did you know that 50-million years ago during the Eocene period, areas of Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah were covered by vast lakes? In fact, the climate was warm and sub-tropical, much like Florida is today.

Now, the area's climate is vastly different; however, the world-renowned Green River Formation holds a snapshot of this Eocene landscape. Buried in ancient lake sediments are fossilized fish, insects, plants, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Fossils from the Green River Formation are exceptional for their abundance and detail of preservation.

Come Fishing for Fossils and reconnect with the fish of today by looking at the fish of yesterday!
